The Pros and Cons of Buying Social Signals

November 17, 2016

As anyone who is involved in purchasing or selling will tell you, traffic is the most important part of e-commerce. Whether you are looking at generating hits for your page or trying to increase the business of your online store, you will need to have people regularly visiting your website in large numbers if you are to be successful. But more than getting people to visit your website, you will need the right users to visit your site. The users that are interested in what you are offering. Without sufficient traffic you will certainly fall behind competitors, lose revenue and eventually have to shut down.

Targeted traffic

This is basically the only type of traffic which matters. It consists of visitors who have searched for your website, service or product specifically. These users are focused on what you have to offer. Getting random traffic doesn’t really help since most visitors will hit the back button the moment they land on your site. This won’t help increase revenues.

A large amount of untargeted traffic may just end up doing more harm than good. All those hits have no contribution to your organization while still forcing you to pay for bandwidth which is being consumed.

Buying traffic

One of the easiest ways for you to get more targeted traffic is through paid services. They include obvious methods like advertising on websites which are relevant to your customers, well-designed marketing campaigns, etc. as well as doubtful techniques like astroturfing. This may seem to be the perfect solution, but is it really that good? Let us take a look at the pros and cons:

More hits

Buying traffic will guarantee you get many more hits on your website. Unfortunate, all of these hits may not be the correct visitors. Even if page views are the only way you generate money, you should always try and generate traffic from visitors who wish to be on your website. These are the visitors who are going to return over and over again and will tell others about your website.

It’s fast

Most companies claim that they can generate traffic to your website quickly. This may be great for your page views but it may just end up compromising your site or increasing your costs. There is an upper limit in almost every web hosting contract, you need to make sure you don’t cross it. This may lead to your site getting disabled until the traffic declines.

When you pay another person to work for you, you will have time to do other things and maximize the usage of your time. At the same time, there are providers out there who will be more than happy to take your money and spam random ID’s with unwanted emails on your behalf. This can get even more complicated if there is a social strategy involved. When handled poorly, such campaigns can become quite intrusive and may even generate ill will towards your company.

So you see, there are both advantages and disadvantages to going down this path. Just remember when you want to buy website traffic is to always go with a reputed provider and you should be fine.
